Early Life

Born on 15 February 1965 in Mankamang Kunda, Jimara, in The Gambia’s Upper River Region, Adama Barrow’s life began just days before the nation attained independence. Raised in an extended family, he was among the few children afforded the opportunity to attend missionary school in his village. His pursuit of education took him to Basse, where he studied at St. George’s Primary and Koba Kunda Primary, before continuing at Crab Island Junior Secondary and Muslim High School in Banjul.

Adult Life

Upon completing high school in 1988, Barrow quickly entered the workforce, joining Musa Njie and Sons Limited under the mentorship of his uncle, the late Alhajie Musa Njie. His diligence and aptitude for business saw him rise from Salesman to Sales Manager. In 2002, he broadened his horizons by relocating to the United Kingdom, where he spent four years before returning home in 2006 to establish Majun Estate Agency, serving as Chief Executive Officer.

Political Career

Barrow’s political journey began in 1996 when he joined the United Democratic Party (UDP). Though his first attempt at elective office in 2007 was unsuccessful, his commitment to democratic ideals earned him key leadership roles within the party, including Regional Coordinator for the Upper River Region and later Deputy Treasurer. By 2016, he had emerged as the UDP’s presidential candidate.

That same year, Barrow became the flagbearer of Coalition 2016, a historic alliance formed to restore democracy and uphold the rule of law. His leadership during the campaign was marked by resilience, humility, and a steadfast belief in the power of the ballot. On 1 December 2016, Gambians entrusted him with their mandate, electing him President.

Presidency and Leadership

President Barrow’s inauguration in January 2017, held at The Gambia Embassy in Dakar due to a constitutional impasse, symbolized both the fragility and resilience of democracy. His calm statesmanship during this period, even amidst personal tragedy, underscored his commitment to peace, constitutional order, and national unity.

Since assuming office, President Barrow has championed reforms that strengthen democratic institutions and safeguard human rights. His administration established landmark commissions—including the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, the Lands Commission, and the National Human Rights Commission—ensuring accountability and transparency. He has advanced freedom of expression, introduced anti‑corruption legislation, and overseen the drafting of a new constitution.

In 2019, under his leadership, The Gambia adopted its first National Security Policy and accompanying strategy. His bold decision to separate the Ministry of Defense from the Presidency reflected a visionary approach to governance and a commitment to institutional integrity.
